Question:

What kind of insect...?

You know how moths wings are? This flying insect had wings like those, but under each wing was another wing! Think about the wings on the Wright Plane, and how one is directly over the other. They were like that.

It's wings were orange and black, but mostly black. It had orange spots on the wings. It looked like a cross between a moth and a butterfly.

I only got a quick look before it flew away.

I live in Ohio, if the area helps any.

What was this insect? I'm sorry the description is so vague. Even a guess might help.

  1. click on the picture.  I'm guessing but maybe the tiger moth there are very many orange/black moths and butterflies.  Both moths and butterflies have 4 wings.

  3. If it was a butterfly, the only two I can think of that fit the description is either a Monarch or Viceroy.

Or it could be some kind of dragonfly, sometimes they have clear wings and look like little bi-planes.  But I've never seen any with orange spots on the wings.

There are moths that mimic large wasps or bees, like maybe a sphinx moth.

And yes, it was an insect.  ;c)

  4. I'd say it was a butterfly, a moth, or a dragonfly. Probably a moth, though.
