Question:

What kind of insurance needed for in home pet sitting business?

We live in NY state. I am considering pet sitting in my home as a side business. How do I go about finding out what insurance I would need? I want to protect myself from liability in case the dog I am watching bites someone or destroys property.

Also, if you know what type of license or permits I would need or where to find out about those in NY state, I would appreciate being pointed in the right direction.

Thanks.

  1. None is required by law.

YOUR policy won't protect you, if the dog destroys his own house, or yours.  But the bite thing is an issue.

Because of that, the liability insurance for this type of business can be pretty expensive - as they can't underwrite by animal.  Expect it to start at $2500, since you want bite liability coverage.    Without bite liability, you'll be able to get it at $500 or so - IF someone is willing to write it.

In any case, you'll need to buy that coverage, through a local, independent agent (www.iiaa.org for a list by zip code).

  2. My suggestion is trying to get as much resource as you can before making final decision, here is a good one.http://insurance.online-frees.info/insur...
