  1. AEI scanners.

They've been around since the early '90s and have become quite sophisticated.

Mounted on the side of equipment, they can be scanned while on the move by track side devices and read the information programmed into them.

Information can include needed maintenance, defect reports, commodity, routing info, disposition, and information with many other parameters.

Google AEI Scanners and all the info you want is there.

Similar to ATC is ATS (Automatic Train Stop).

Right now, under developement is  PTC or, "Positive Train Control."  I always welcome new ideas in safety, but what is under way right now is a HUGE mistake.  I would encourage you, and others who might see this answer, go to my 360 and read the blog posted on 4-20-07, titled "On The Point."  This is very important and significant info or I wouldn't be including this info in this answer.

  2. I think they need to have a GPS system. This could make trains safer and they would know where it is located.
