Question:

What kind of job could one get in the adoption field?

After so many questions and answers that I've read on this board, it really makes me wonder...are there any jobs out there in this field that are born out of the desire to be HONEST to all involved parties? Are there any jobs that have all the resources in one place to encourage birth parents to parent their children, but also to make an adoption plan if that is what THEY decide? Are there places where all members of the adoption circle can feel welcome, cared for, united, safe, fairly treated, and told the truth?

'Cuz man, that's a job I'd love to have!

  1. Lobbyist

  2. Please create that position for yourself then. HONESTY in adoption isn't currently happening much.

  3. I don't think all adoption agencies are bad.  There are some who I do think have the best interest of the children involved.  The agency I was adopted through is now a part of a larger human service non-profit that serves children and their main goal is to find families for kids in foster care who are freed for adoption.  They council birth mothers about all of their options and do not push them to choose adoption. They do not advertise to attract pregnant woman and talk them into putting their child up for adoption. They also have support groups for birth mothers, adoptees who are searching and for families interested in adopting.  I also know for a fact that the Executive Director (an aparent) supports opening closed records.

There are a lot of interesting jobs there, not all social work.  There are people who are permanacy specialists who help the kids before adoption and help support them and their new families post adoption.  There are other clinician postitions that help support the kids and families and sociotherapists who work with the kids.  There are also talk and art therapists.  Find an adoption agency web site and look at all of the positions listed under staff.  You might be surprised at what you find.

  4. It sounds to me that you need to ask this question where the action is.... Try asking at nursing schools, advocacy services, abortion centers, adoption services, family planning services, guidance centers and the State Department of Human Services.  If you don't get the answers you need -- start something up yourself.
