I am a high school junior and going to take the SAT soon; I'm also thinking about college (It's never too early is it?) I'm planning to major in biology and chemistry because I want to pursue a career in the medical field, but I'm not sure what kind of job I want to do yet. Keep in mind I come from an Asian family and how stereotypical it is for them to want their kids to become doctors. I've thought about becoming a pediatrician but I want to keep my options open and see what else there is that I can consider. Some statistics and details would be great! I am currently doing volunteer work at the hospital just so you know! ^_^ I appreciate all your help! Thanks~

  1. anything in the medical field will always be needed. people are fragile, stupid creatures. they will always be hurt or sick. im an EMT and i say stupid people are my job security. best of luck! and by the way...its never too early to start thinking and planning for your future.

  2. Doctors, nurses, physical therapists, pharmacists, public health people, bioengineers and medical researchers will always be needed, no question. However, technology and medical research will mean changes in how jobs are done, and some technology-based jobs may become obsolete.

For example, there is a trend to make diagnostic testing less invasive. So perhaps some of today's tests, like the x-ray, could be replaced by other things, like MRI (which is very expensive right now; this was just an example, not necessarily something that will happen).

Speaking of trends, there's also a trend to make medical care more accessible and less costly, so physician's assistants and nurse practitioners are doing some of the things physicians do.

Another trend is the aging of the population. Geriatrics is a booming specialty area.

Pediatrics is not going to go out of style! Definitely look around, see what interests you, and don't get bogged down in statistical predictions.

Besides the pre-med subjects, certain psychology courses can be very useful in medicine.

  3. medical field will never not be available. people will always be sick. Nursing, Doctors, Pharmacists, Physical Therapists, Dieticitians, Computer people, etc will always be needed.

Im sure with your background as you stated that nursing would be considered beneath you but being a Pharmacist is very respectable also and considered more respected b/c it requires such high education and pays very well.
