I would like to know so I can do this when I grow up, but I don't know what kind of education is required, who would hire me, or what this job is even called.

  1. you need an art degree with classes in illustration and/or graphic design.

most colleges offer an arts program as well as community colleges. most book publishing firms would hire you as well as graphic design employers.

  2. It's either called book designer or graphic designer.  You generally need a BFA -- that is Bachelor of Fine Arts.  Among other topics you study are typography, two (and three in foundation classes) dimensional design, and so forth.  Calligraphy is something good to have in your background.

All the arts are very competitive.  This one is no exception.  MIT is actually one of the most awesome places you can get a degree from if you want to do it -- but you really have to be good to get in there in the first place.

    Good luck.
