  1. oil and mining you typically need a MS in geology. you should really get a BS in geology, you can teach with a BA at a highschool, but working in the industry you'll need a BS in geology.  you can work in environmental, engineering (geotech), hydrogeology, mining consultant. those are the majority of jobs you can can get with a BS in geology.

    Good Luck!

  2. http://www.aapg.org/explorer/salarysurve... This may give you a good idea about the jobs and pay rates.  good luck what ever you decide to do.  Welcome to the team!

  3. Check out the oil and gas industry...........I rode this pony until it died in 81, so you better listen.  When you have a job, you will have more money than what to do with, when it ends, you will wonder if you can get a job at a convenience store.  Invest the excess and live modestly until the boom busts.

  4. A BA in geology is geared towards teaching, otherwise you will find yourself working outside your major as does 80% of grads.

  5. There are always jobs in fast foods.    Also, for you, maybe a job in the oil or mining industries.

  6. When I was in Grad school for Marine Science, Geology majors were a large part of the incoming class. They pay you a stipend plus tuition to go to grad school for Marine science, it's really cool experience. So in a way it is a job with a BA, you may get something like 16 thousand a year PLUS your tuition which credits another say 15000 towards your earnings, you come out without school loans.  Don't imagine yourself out at exotic locations doing field work much, you may be collecting data for about 4 weeks and spend the rest of the year sorting out samples, testing, retesting, writing, finding sources to back your ideas, editing.. and so on!  Still very rewarding path.

So you can become a Marine Scientist (Do not think of Marine Biology studying whales and dolphins - totally different!!)  Yes Marine Geologists are hired for big bucks by companies wanting to discover oil, and other natural resources.

You could always become a teacher!

  7. Chris is wrong.

University of Oregon awards BA's in geology, and no Bsc's...also Msc's and Phd's too.

Anyways, the myth that you need a Msc to find work in the mineral industry is laughable, especially with the demand in today's metal price environment.

As an example not listed so far, some people take their geo undergraduate work and parlay it into a run at law school and go into environmental law.

To counter the unsourced horsepucky about "80%" of grads working outside the field - exactly 100% of my undergrad graduating class is currently employed in some branch of the geological tree of employment...

  8. any degree in geology would be a Bachelor of Science (BSc) but you may be referring to an educational arts degree with geology as your teaching major.

A BSc in geology usually means a career in mining and mineral exploration, both of which are in demand while metal and oil prices are high. There are many fields and specialities as well as educational and government positions.

Salaries are high compared to other scientists but often means working in remote areas and developing countries.

Graduate salaries are around the 60-80K mark depending on location and field.
