I'm 13 right now, but I'm really interested in working for the UN in the future. What would I have to major in? International Relations?

I love children, and I would just love to travel around the world and meet children from orphanages and just help them. Whether it be diseases or poverty.. im not sure yet, but I think my path will clear up pretty soon.

Sounds a bit cliche, i know, but I want to be some kind of an ambassador. Kind of like Angelina Jolie :)

  1. If you want to help children, you need to major in something that will help children: education, health care, child psychology... or think about what would help a family as a whole: again, health care, agricultural training, literacy training, micro business development, etc.

The UN employs a huge variety of people of just about every area of expertise. You can see an example of jobs here:

If you want to work for the UN or another international agency, you need to focus on:

-- developing an area of expertise/specialization

-- being able to work in at least one additional language to English (that means not just a couple of years of high school French; it means being able to read, write, speak and work in another language)

-- gaining as much experience locally as possible.

Angelina Jolie is probably a very nice person, but she's just a spokesperson for the UN; her role is just to raise awareness, and that's an important role, but it's very part time, and very, very limited. She doesn't lend any kind of expertise to missions, she doesn't actually work with any children to help improve their lives. What you want to do, I hope, is something *much* more -- actually work with children and others to improve their lives.

This web site is focused on helping people who want to volunteer overseas, but its all valid for someone like yourself who wants to work in development activities overseas:
