  1. Look for a sit on top kayak, they are much more forgiving and you do not have to learn how to roll one.  When a SOT rolls you go out.  They are very forgiving and handle pretty easily and making good fishing platforms for calm rivers.  I got a pretty good kayak for $350.00 once on sale a d**k's Sporting goods and got good use out of it.  You might want to try to borrow or rent one to see if you like it.

  2. If you want to paddle smaller rivers witch is the best place to start look for a nine ft. boat with foot braces they are lite and easy to maneuver on small river,s. Old Town is a good inexpensive brand and can be had for around 300dollars. look on eBay they  have a good selection of boat,s at cheap price,s. Don't forget you PFD and a good paddle set i would suggest a touring paddle plastic so if you scrape bottom you wont ruin a good wood paddle. Now just go out and have fun but be care full don't get caught under a tree or something.

  3. Sorry, unless you can find a used boat, $300 will not go far. Work out a budget: kayak, helmet, PFD, paddle, car rack and clothing. Contact the American Canoe Association for a club near you. Contact them.

  4. floating tends to be a common quality in kayaks....not sinking
