I want to get a kayak that I can use with a family member. If I go solo can I use the second position for hauling fishing gear, beer, whatever?

  1. I was in that situation last year, my decision was to buy a single kayak 14', with 2 hatches/rudder/knee brace and comfortable seat.  Mine weighs 47lbs and add an extra 10lbs of gear, I was able to bring it to the beach on my own without any help.  If family wants to come, they rent (for just $20/day).  I am so glad that I made that decision, most of the time I go on my own.  I can't imagine paddling on my own in a tandem.  I would be too big for me to handle.

Best to ask the sales person who sells kayaks.

    Good luck, you'll love kayaking...
