We have a typical 2 story with 2 windows in the front and then a small porch and then garage. We have a curved (typical ) bed where the corner of the house has a rounded bump out and then curves in and then out a little to the drive way. We currently have nothing at the corner and dying pyramid hollies and holly bushes 2 on each side of a j*p. maple in the middle and then a dying verbena at the next bump out and then 3 boxwoods. The hollies look horrible agents out dark grey house the boxwoods look great because they are bright green. What are good modern shrubs and a lay out? It's very shaded, almost no sun except on corner. .Help!

  1. It is very difficult to try and provide you with an answer without seeing the house, its style and what's around the house.  You say some of the plants are dying -- take them out and see what that gives you.  You may like what it looks like.

The holly is a dark green and you say you don't like it.  Either take it out or consider repainting your house.

For shade Yews would be my choice.  You can get them in a spreading form or in an upright form.  They are slow growers but can be pruned and shaped as needed.

For bedding plants, HOSTAS would be my number 1 choice.  They are shade tolerant and come in a variety of shapes, sizes and colors.
