  1. Macs are quite expensive, yes. I'd get an Asus EEE PC - very cheap, very light and can take a few knocks too.

  2. 90% of the world uses PC and they are NOT compatible with Mac's. so it basically boils down to how much you want to fit in with the crowd at the coffee shop. get a PC and you will have more software to choose from, better upgrades, and no compatibility issues. or buy into the Apple marketing that they dont get viruses and that only 'beautiful people' are allowed to own them.

so if you follow the herd get a Mac, if you can think for yourself and want value for money get a PC...

  3. When you go to the Apple store, ask for a "refreshed" mac, this is basically a open box item, (and very often never used). usesaly you can get 15%-20% off a "refreshed" computer. other wise you will spend just as much money on a PC, because of all the other software you will have to buy!

  4. I just looked at Macs and as an artist-loved them but they still have many limitations as to what you can use and do-I must admit I'm used to my HPs and windows and all the software available. I've owned HPs for at least 10 yearsand been very happy. My son just bought an Acer laptop for less than 400.00 thru Best Buy. Also check out tigerdirect.com-they are similar and have great pricing.

  5. Mac, but, truly: you should check with your classes and, if at all relevant, buy the type that will be used in any classes! Then, check, whether you'll be lugging a computer around. Which is lightest? Then check the keyboards: which feels best TO YOU?

Look at September special issue of PC Magazine. There's a special article on Best PCs On Campus. There's also these consumer ratings for PCs in this order: Apple, Lenovo, Sony, Dell, Acer, HP, Toshiba, Gateway

  6. If you are planning on being hired by a company when you graduate, you should go with a windows-based PC.  They will expect you to know how to get around WELL in a windows environment.  If you are going to be self-employeed, it doesn't matter, because you get to choose what operating system you are going to run.

Macs are considered "cool and hip" by people who know relativly little about computers.  They don't have a clue WHY, except maybe they like the looks better...

You are going to get a faster computer for the money by going with "PC" than with Mac.  The hardware is essentially the same, apple just makes a lot more profit on their stuff.  (It's even possible, although illegal, to get mac OS running on a PC.  You have to fool the OS into thinking it is running on apple produced hardware.)
