  8. a normal last name?

  9. Using the 1930 census.. I find persons with this name, who have roots in Mexico.. but ALSO some who came from Italy.

This is among the most common urban legends in this area.. that a name is limited to one origin. That is OFTEN false.

It would be useless to assume it is only a variation of Santiago (which is what it does sound like), then conclude that Santiago is a Spanish name, and you therefore have Spanish background. If Carmine Santago happened to be your great grandfather. HE came from Italy.. and you would not be Spanish at all.

Without looking for the actual origin of YOUR family/ ancestors, you have no way to know for sure.

If you happen to know the name of an ancestor who was born prior to 1930, and about where he lived, I can do a search for him in the census.  Send me a note through my profile.
