  1. If its spelled exactly like that, I'd go with Polish also.

If its spelled Tarnicky, its more likely to be Russian.

It might also be Italian.  I'd bet my money on Polish, but Italian is a possibility.

I can't think of any other language it might be.

  2. I tried a couple of web sites but found only no reference for USA since about 1500. The reference was of two deaths in Social security records and I think that may have been in Australia.

If you are dead keen on finding the origins you may have to search different countries. That poses problems because of language.

You sent me off on a wild goose chase which I enjoyed as it opened up new areas for me. I Googled " origins of Tarnicki ?" Perhaps if you include "surname" you may hit the jackpot.

  3. 1. Johann Gustav Paul Tarnick - International Genealogical Index / GE

Gender: Male Birth: 15 SEP 1870 Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen

    2. CARL HERMANN TARNICK - International Genealogical Index / GE

Gender: Male Christening: 24 OCT 1869 Sankt Nikolai, Berlin Stadt, Brandenburg, Preussen

    3. REGINA TARNICKI - International Genealogical Index / GE

Gender: Female Marriage: 04 NOV 1666 Rastenburg, Ostpreussen, Preussen

Why not just get the death certificated for your ancestors here in the US who were the first emigrants.
