It has infested my entire lawn before..made my dad have to hire someone to give us a new lawn. It is very tough, and some "strands" can stretch a VERY long way. It hurts my hands to pull them up. Here are some pictures, and be sure to read the descriptions specific to each picture. Thanks!

  1. This is kikuyu grass.Invasive but a very tough grass to use for a lawn. It's a shame you replaced your lawn, this would have eventually taken over but it would have been a very hardy and drought tolerant lawn.Kikuyu dies off a bit in the winter but looks fab the rest of the year.We have three kids and a dog and this lawn withstands everything we throw at it.

  2. I can tell by the answers everyone has their own opinion.  Ask your lawn guys or take it to your local nursery.  You'll want to know what you need to do so you don't have it again since your trying to get rid of it.  Good luck

  3. Looks like St Augustine grass.  The grass can grow 'runners' and spread horizontally.  More common in the south, not sure where you are located.  People have their whole lawns here with that kind of wide blade grass.  I prefer Bermuda myself.

  4. It looks like zoysia grass.  To know for certain if you live in a northern climate it would be the last grass to green up in the spring and the 1st to turn brown in the fall.  It is sold frequently in the back of gardening magazines as lawn plugs. Most people either love it or hate it, I am one of the ones who hates it. It is a very thick grass, once established it is even hard to push a mower through. It will only grow well in full sun, and like I said before it is the last to green up and the 1st to go brown. The good points are it is very disease resistant, and drought tolerant and it also grows so thick that weeds don't have a chance to come up though it most of the time..

  5. We call that wire grass around here.  the country cousin of bermuda grass often used on golf courses.  It's tough alright.  Actually, it has a good side in controling erosion when people start digging and scaring up stuff.  (It is lots af other places too)  Granny called it Mother Nature's Bandage.
