Question:

What kind of learner am I and what are some solutions for me?

Doing things in numerous steps confuse me. For example: in math, a problem would require our class to do them in 10 steps and I could get the same answer in 4. I would still get the math problem wrong even when getting the same answer at the end. My mind tells me it does not want to make sense so therefor I become stubborn. I want to go back to college. Any degree ya get is gonna require math, and because of my learning problems, it discourages me to further myself. What can i do do succeed? I know I am smart but i don't know how to "re-train" my mind/ thought process in order to do things the way I'm "supposed" to.

  1. I suggest you research aptitude testing centers in your area or seek advice from a school counselor that may know more about them.

You might be pleasantly surprised to know there are a lot of folks out there with similiar struggles and find it motivating to learn more about your strengths so you can plug into the right environment for learning....whether it be online courses, private tutoring, a junior college with small classes....etc.

    Best wishes!

  2. I bet you had problems in school , because you use a different algorithm  to get the same answer.  Actually , you were ahead of your time.  That is what they are doing in the new math programs such as Everyday Math.   Check out a college or community college near you for  academic placement test.   Most tests just want you to get the right anser in a short time.  The test does not care how you get the answer.  Once you get into a math class, talk to the math teacher before class and explain your situation.  This does not sound like a disability.  You just use your mind differently.  It could even turn out to be a gift.
