Question:

What kind of lens can be used on the Nikon D40 other than the 55-200 mm and 18-55 mm?

i have a d40 and have both the lenses listed above but i'm just wondering if i can attatch a telephoto, fisheye, or wide angle lens or anything else or do i have to upgrade to a d60 or d80?

  1. The D40 does not have a built-in auto-focus motor. So any G or D AF lenses will fit, but will not auto-focus. Most other nikon lenses will fit but with limited support for automatic features like auto-focus or metering. You might also experience some vignetting depending on the lens. Only the AF-S or AF-I lenses are fully supported...


  2. ANY Nikon AF-I or AF-S lens can be used on a D40, D40x or D60.  That includes 29 current lenses made by Nikon and many more good used ones.

  3. I got the 18-200mm VR. No switching lenses for me. And every Nikon lens made since like 1959 will fit  (although on some, the AF won't work, or it has to be stopped down manually). Check Ken Rockwell's site for compatibility.

  4. Any Nikon lens, with the exception of a few early ones, will work. Of course you can only focus manually and your auto metering will not work. But if you use a hand held meter every thing will be fine.
