I have noticed over the last few weeks an extraordinary amount of small lizards all around the outside of my house. I managed to catch one and snapped a few shots of it before I released him back into the yard. Can anyone tell me what kind of lizard it is?

  5. Ah, I'm so jealous.  lol  And Kuddos, for releasing the lil darling back where he belongs.

You are seeing "many" because he's new to the world, and has just hatched, as his siblings have.

He's what is commonly referred to as a "house" gecko.  He'll be a fairly bland unremarkable tan adult of about 3-4" total length.  They don't get large, and are secretive.  The skin will be "bumpy" in appearance.

He's equipped to live in the western US (and other parts of the world where he has escaped & flourished).  His talented feet pads enable him with the ability to climb most surfaces easily (including a textured wall and ceiling), in search or pursuit of prey insects.

I missing living out west, and seeing these lil guys at night.

I own 13 captive born house geckos, and always delight when young appear in the tank.

Enjoy them where they belong, and be thankful they are a native delight.

You can encourage them to be viewed by installing a bug zapper away from your sitting area.  They will emerge at night to feed.  They can become quite unafraid of you, if left alone and only talked to.

They will control the insect population in your yard, and adults will even take tiny scorpions.

    Enjoy them as nature intended.

I hope this has been helpful.

  6. i love house geckos. i have been to the philippines 2 times with my wife who is from there and we would stay with relatives. at her grandmothers they were inside the house. as soon as everyone stopped moving around they would come out and my wives 92 yr old grandmother would tell me their names. it was so cool. i would watch them until I fell asleep. They would hang on the walls waiting for bugs to fly by and as fast as lightning they would grab them. glad you let it go. I believe in the wild to be left in the wild. thanks for sharing it brought back memories. I hope to get back there next summer (2009 )

  8. It's a Mediterranean Gecko. As the name suggests, they are not native, but are introduce in many parts of the southern U.S.
