Question:

What kind of lube will prevent my chain from rusting?

I leave my Trek 4300 outside on the bike rack. It's raining today, so I'm wondering what lube will prevent the drive-train from rusting?

Thanks.

  1. RustCheck,the green can.

    Fluidfilm.[has lanolin in it]

    Constant attention to chain lubrication.

These are just three of the the things I know that can help you.

The rust check is best for protection[of the 3 I offered]

The fluid film is the best for staying power, because of the lanolin[small particles of sheeps wool ends]

But the last of the 3 with attention can surpass all no matter what the lube.

I hope this can help you

  2. dont't use a motor oil for car engines it will damage your chain i learn that the hard way my advice if you don't won't your chain to rust then keep it away from water but there is no oil or lube that stops rust from happen hope this helps

  3. I've just switched to Boeshield T9 and I was impressed with the way that it stayed on the chain during a ride on wet roads with a lot of splashing.

Don't forget about lubing the cables, too. Every once in a while, shift to the largest gear and then pump the shifter down to the smallest gear without turning the pedals. You should be able to slip the cable housing out of the frame's cable stop and slide it up to expose the wire within. Lube that and then restore the housing to its original position.

  4. Definitely a 'wet' type lube. I tried using White Lightning for my winter commuter once - the chain rusted almost before my eyes.  There are no 'best' lubes, you can only try different ones and see what you like best. I like WL, but I rarely ride my good bikes in the rain and cleanliness is my #1 priority. I'm going to try some DuMond for my bike ride tonight.

  5. A lube will help prevent rust.  Personally, I'd recommend a particularly tenacious lube like Finish Line Wet.  Finish Line Wet goes on wet, stays wet and doesn't easily wash off.  In the meantime it really repels moisture.  Due to the fact it stays wet, it will tend to get crudded up over time.  So, you will have to clean your chain more often.

Other dry type lubes and wax based lubes don't tend to wash off more easily.  In particular, I find wax based lubes need reapplication after any rain at all.

    Hope this helps.

  6. Nothing. No lube can "prevent" rusting. Even stainless steel chains will rust eventually.

Parafin based lubes like "White Lightning" prevent rusting best but they do get gummy after a while and aren't as fast as other lubes.

Best advice: Get it out of the rain! Even a cheap tarp will help.
