  1. To become an ambassador, you must be very close to the President or to the Chairman of the Confirmation Committee in congress as this is a political appointee position. It will not matter if you are a foreign service graduate or not. Most of you may disagree, but the fact that the President may appoint anybody he feels can represent his government's position to to a foreign country will get the job. Example: Ambassador's job is to convince the host country that the US led invasion of Iraq is poilically correct. An ambasssador serves at the pleasure of the President and can be fired anytime.**

  2. oh they have to study a lot !!!   war, corruption, fraud, the art of lies, pr, schmoozing, fine dining, stealing from the taxpayer.  it is suggested that they get a doctorate in each of these. lol

  3. Ambassadors are political appointments. However, if you're interested in the diplomatic services, look at the foreign service positions in the State Department to identify their education requirements: http://www.state.gov/careers/

  4. You'd probably want to start working on a degree in International Relations.

  5. Contrary to what others have answered, very few ambassadors are political appointees.  Nearly all are very senior foreign service officers who rose through the ranks due to their skills and abilities.  As for what one should study to join the foreign service, in fact, it doesn't matter.  All you have to do is pass the written and oral exams.  Any needed language is taught at the Foreign Service Institute, as is most essential training.

  6. You would need to follow a career path in foreign service so...

take social studies type courses like history, geography, political science and government classes.  Make sure you speak and write the very best English and become fluent in at least one other language.  You may want to get a grounding in economics and take a public speaking class, as well.  Good luck to you!
