  1. You have what we call an ego an till you realize that you can kill someone I dont think your fight to practice the art.  You wont get to do the hard stuff till about 2 years into your training any way.  But you could try karate if you feel like you could handle it.

  2. k , the whole point of martial arts is NOT because it's cool. I dont think you should get in to it if that's all you think it's about. But if you were to go into a type of martial arts, i would strongly suggest ju-jits-su (i have no clue how you spell it) but unlike karate or whatever , its more based on real life and how you would better defend yourself. I took it , and it was amazing and areally helped.

  3. None...

You have the wrong attitude for martial arts!

    Well... maybe BOXING.

  4. Check your phone book and internet for what's available in your local area. Do some research on different arts also. When you see something that sparks your interest give that school a call permission to observe a class.

Observe the senior students. If their technique is weak and sloppy then don't even bother joining. Check out the attitudes of the students and instructor.  If you like what you see and hear then join.

By the way I don't think there is anything wrong with thinking marital arts is cool.  Knowing how to defend oneself and family IS cool. I thought that when I was a teenager and still do, although I get a lot more out of it than "being cool".

  5. Different arts have different philosophies and many time people with different attributes do better in one art over another.  Of course if the instructor of the "best martial art" is a jerk youre not going to get a lot out of it so find a place where you can train and be comfortable and agree w/ their methods of instruction.  Try as many as you can and hey no ne said you had to pick just one.

  6. Before going through all the martial arts and deciding which sounds the coolest, find out what is available near you.

No point in picking a martial art and find out that the nearest school is 200 miles away.

Once you know what is available to you then get yourself down to a class and ask to watch.

Most good schools will give you a free lesson to let you decide if you like it. Try them all first and see what suits you.

Also, stay clear of anything that tries to make you sign up for long term commitment.

These are known as McDojos and are BAD

  7. knocking people out is not the point. find your center first.

  8. Choose any martial art u can get a coach nearby. I think judo, taekwondo, karate and Taichi does the best.  Learn from a coach, this is the most important thing u must remember.
