What kind of material is better for a sling shot?

i am 14 years old and i have made a slinshot design out of wood and i have bought the sling thing from a local store that has already made for slingshots....can you tell me what kind of material is better for making a slingshot. i have made it already but im wondering is a homemade one safer than a store bought one?
