  1. Self-experience:

    Since the Ancient Greek era they had olive oil - it is (and was) literally present in every dish possible and thinkable - it is different in every region (according to the sort and type of trees/olives). Also normal vegitables (tomato, potato, onions) and honey (flower). Grains and bread, wine (think of Dyonysus), meat (chicken).

    There even was some legend about some gang or ancient robbers cooking (smoking) stolen meatn.

    Dishes tracked down to the ancient Greece origins: skordalia, lentil soup, retsina, pasteli; some to the Hellenistic and Roman periods: loukaniko; and Byzantium: feta cheese, avgotaraho, paximadi. There are also many ancient and Byzantine preparations which are no longer consumed: porridge as the main staple, fish sauce nuc mam, salt water mixed into wine, etc.

    Fish was the main source of protein for the Ancient Greeks. Beef was very expensive, so it was rarely eaten. Also, because of their feelings about sacrificing meat, beef and pork were mostly eaten only during religious festivals. It was during the festivals that cows or pigs were sacrificed to the gods, and the meat was cooked and handed out to the public.


  3. I can't believe no one's mentioned lamb yet. Sheep have been a huge part of the Greek economy for thousands of years. Aside from their meat they were very valuable for their wool.
