I have a 5 month old who has been having a lot of nasal congestion. At night it seems to be the worst as it interrupts her sleep. At night I place her in a inclined position, use vicks baby rub, and nasal syringe...I am still having some problems.

  1. I always give my son saline drops(for infants). I put in it, and let it sit for a few minutes then use the nasal syringe. It loosens in up pretty good. I always use a humidifier also, to help keep things lose.

  2. use a saline spray to assist with the bulb syringe, and a cool mist humidifier...

  3. I am going through the exact same thing as you are right now with a 6  1/2 month old. I bought a cool mist vaporizor and that has helped a lot at night. Also I bought the "Little Noses" Nasal Saline and that has also helped a lot!!! Put the Saline in the nose and wait a few minuites. Then suck it out with the "sucker". I hope this helps.

  4. Do not use any OTC oral products as they are ineffective in a dose small enough for an infant so young, and have even proven to be dangerous in some cases. Use saline nasal spray (non-medicated) and suction through the nostrils fairly aggressively. Yes, baby will struggle and cry, but that is really the best way to relieve nasal congestion. Use a warm steam humidifier during the night. (Doctors will only recommend the cool mist for safety reasons, but trust me, the warm steam ones work much better)

BTW, you have to use a LOT of saline. It may sound like your baby is gurgling or choking, then suction immediately, but you have to use a lot to really loosen it up and get all the mucous out. And don't be afraid to really get in there  the bulb syringe.

  5. Besides using an aspirator...no medicine unless something is suggested by the doctor.

  6. saline drops

  7. Just saline drops, a nasal syringe and a humidifier helps too!

  8. i wouls consult your gp

  9. Hi,

I think the most important thing to start with is to get your baby into a good sleep routine.  I had massive problems with getting my 4 month old son to sleep.  He would just lie awake and cry for hours, then when he finally went to sleep he would wake every hour or two hours through the night and cry again!  Talk about pulling our hair out .... we were absolutely desperate for sleep!

It was a baby sleep audio program recommended by a friend that finally saved us. We followed the advice and began by creating a baby sleep routine which included bathtime, dimming of the lights, putting James into his crib, final nappy change and then lullabies. We also made recommended changes to his naps during the day and used some of the other recommended techniques. Within two weeks he was sleeping through the night most nights with just the odd night where he would just wake once!

Definitely start by creating a good baby sleep routine though and you could find that solves most of your baby sleep problems.

    Good luck!
