Question: Is soya formula safe for infants?

Answer: Human breast milk is preferable to formula for infants, if possible - but there is no evidence that soya formula is inferior to cow's milk formula

Question: I am planning to breast-feed my baby. What is the best vegan diet for me to eat?

Answer: Our dietician suggests a balanced vegan diet as a sound basis for health for parents and children. Question: What is the best vegan diet for my children to eat?

Answer: A varied plant-based diet, combined with adequate physical activity, is a sound basis for a healthy lifestyle for people of all ages. Thousands of healthy children have been raised on a balanced vegan diet. This will include a reliable source of B12 - such as fortified soya milk or nutritional yeast. Low calorie fruits and vegetables can be insufficiently calorie-dense for a young child.

The Vegan Society publishes "Feeding Your Vegan Infant - With Confidence" by Sandra Hood, a state registered vegan dietitian, which offers comprehensive guidance on raising vegan children (from pre-conception to early school years).

good luck and healthy baby !!!!

  3. Rice milk. It's naturally sweet, and has tons of vitamins/minerals that your son will soak up. Soy milk may be "good enough" for your son, but I know  from experience that soy milk can cause reproductive problems in females (my cycle went to a stand-still for the month I drank soy milk). So if you do decide to go the soy route, just watch him and see if he has any problems digesting it. And if you have a couple of dollars to spare, try out the rice milk (it comes in a box; it's called rice dream). You can easily cook with it too, though once both you and your son taste it, you'll be drinking it before the day is over! Good luck to you, and thank you for being a wonderful mom and caring about your son's health enough to realize how bad the animal milk can be.

  4. It depends on his age.

Rice milk, oat milk, and hemp milk are great choices.  Soy is typically safe for infants - be sure to buy organic unsweetened varieties like So Nice.  I'd hold-off on nut milks until he's 21 months and then introduce them gradually.

Maggie: in the study you're citing, the men who had decreased sperm count were eating soy that was preserved in formaldehyde.  The cohort eating fermented soy did not experience lowered sperm counts.

I think the population of China speaks very well to the (lack of) impact of soy on fertility, no?

  5. Breast milk is best. Formula is an excellent substitute or supplement. When he's a little older, cows' milk is excellent. Don't be in a mad rush to make a vegan of your little one; he needs a higher-quality diet than you do.

  6. My daughter likes fortified rice milk a whole lot more, it's sweeter and the consistency is favorable over soy milk.

Since your son is male, I would limit soy milk consumption, because there is phytoestrogen in the soy milk, and recent studies (Harvard School of Medicine, namely) have confirmed that even a single serving of soy every two days dramatically reduces a man's ability to produce sperm. Meanwhile, your son is prepubescent, and there are very few and very inconclusive tests on young boys.

Some soy consumption isn't harmful, I'm sure of that, but increasingly it looks like OVER-relying on soy to compensate for animal products is not wise. There are way too many choices out there to stick to nothing but soy products! I'm vegan and I eat soy 2-3 times a week at most, and I'm female on top of it.

There should be variety in a child's diet anyway, and because he is a little boy and research results remain controversial and varied, use another non-dairy milk, like full-calorie almond milk or rice milk. Look for something fortified with calcium and other nutrients (like soy milk is) and with 120 calories a cup or more if possible.

  7. soy milk will be sufficient.

that's what i was brought up on.

    i couldn't digest animal milk.

  8. soymilk is awesome, the same amount of calcium and it comes in all flavors. some people will say it gives them estrogen, some kind of female chemical, and they say it will give him b***s and stuff

dont believe them. my research on the net says it is such trace amounts it will in no way make any difference whatsoever

  9. Rice milk or hemp milk.  But why does your child need any kind of "milk"?  That's just the dairy industry's brainwashing.  Once you wean your child, s/he shouldn't need milk of any kind.

Why formula?  Breast milk is best.

  10. Ask your doctor I think he/she would be the best person to give you advice on healthy foods for your child.

  11. For drinking I like almond milk the best.  I don't think what kind matters as much as what brand. Check the labels carefully - many of the soy, rice, and almond brands add salts, sugars, and an ingredient or two you can't pronounce.
