Question:

What kind of motor does my hand-held power planer have?

I own a portable hand-held planer and would like to know what kind of motor is it likely to have?

Is it a DC motor brush or brushless, AC motor bush or brushless, Induction motor (don't think so)?

The only other details I have are: MAC Allister 3 blade planer 750W, 230-240V - 50z

If anyone has an idea, please let me know. Basically it's just a basic power planer. The type made by Black and Decker and lots of other manufacturers which you can buy in the UK for £60-200.

  1. Almost certainly, it's a universal motor. The rotor and the field winding both reverse as the electric field reverses, so it can run on AC or DC. Technically it is a brushed DC motor, but they are typically customized for AC, as they generally are used only for AC. Relatively cheap, low efficiency, not real durable, fairly light for power generated, not thermally great, so not good for high duty cycle.

  2. It would almost certainly be an AC motor, WITH brushes. Brushless motors can't generate enough torque for a planer, and anything that plugs into the mains line without a transformer will be an AC motor.

  3. a small series motor is used in small appliances

  4. most likely it's a brush motor.

    they have higher torque.

i'd think it would be DC, but i'm less sure of that.

rectifiers aren't all that expensive, or complicated, and again, it would increase the torque.

  5. burshless don't get a bruss they are not very good
