Question:

What kind of motorcycle would I want if I have never driven one?

I am interested in getting a bike to drive to and from work, around town and the like. I currently have a mustang and the gas costs are crazy. I have never driven a bike before, and I don't need anything flashy. But I don't know anything about buying a motorcycle. I know quite a bit about cars but this seems significantly different. Also, how would I get my license? I live in Ohio.

  1. I have a Suzuki 250;  I think Honda makes a 250 also.  It is not made for long trips; I do not drive it for my hour long commute :-), but I do drive it around my home towm to save on gas.  It is a small bike with a top speed of about 70, but I never go more than like 55.  Its easy to handle and not too heavy to hold up at traffic lights.

  2. first s*x does matter. due to the fact about body weight and stature. if your small and dont want to be a racer.. look into a 600cc or 750cc if your a male... if your a female same thing if you want some power if not and you just want to ride around.. look into a 250cc or higher... you really should take a safe rider course, look at local community colleges or your dmv for more info. they teach you how to ride and all the state laws and give you your license..  to be honest, street bikes are more for looks and are uncomfortable for long rides. you will find out from experience you will not want to ride when it rains or if it is really cold even if you have gear on.. its more of short distance and fun factor. good luck.. if your on a budget buy off a person never a dealer... you will always be better off buying a brand new bike rather than a used and possibly dropped/ damaged bike...

  3. Dont be afraid to go get a Honda when you and if you do decide to get one. Despite what diehard harly folks wil say, hondas are very reliable and work just great. The only reason a Harley has the the whole resale thing is because of the name. They arent any better and probably not quite as well built as a Japanese bike. If they are now then they have improved. Sorry all you Harley folks out there, I really dont care what you ride, just dont like to see people telling others who know nothing that Harleys are the end all be all.

  4. Don't make an all common mistake, buying one before you learn. Take advantage of a class that provides their own bikes. That way you can determine if it's going to be something you like and can handle. Even if you pass the class and decide you like it - try to convince someone to loan you or even find if you can rent one and get out and try the streets first. That way it will become a matter of taste and preference for you and you won't risk as much with making an investment... then go sit on as many bikes as you desire until you find one  that agrees with you....

  5. I'm a lady bike rider myself, and I would make the following suggestions:

1st you need to make sure you can sit comfortably and still put both feet flatly on the ground.  2nd, visit all the bike dealers, in your area, and see if they offer free courses in riding.  Most Harley Davidson dealers offer to reinmburse you, if you buy your bike from them. If you pass the course, most of them have state license personel there to license you.  Harley's will be a safer bet, as they hold their value better than Honda, and the other sport bike manufacturers.  Don't settle for something that is cheap, and find out you will have to sell it to get what you want.  Custom features can wait.  You can add chrome and custom paint, as you can afford it.

  6. Honda Rebel

    Suzuki GZ 250

    Yamaha V-Star 250

Are perfect for new riders and around the town driving at speeds 50 MPH or less.  Not really ideal for riding on the interstate though.

Just google your states DMV to find out what is required.  Many states waive the written and road test if you pass an MSF course.
