  1. I'll preface my answer by saying I'm a Specialized fan.  I ride Specialized bikes and really like their products and customer service.  There are several very good bike companies out there, but I'll answer with what I know.

You really have a lot of options in the $600 - $1000 price range.  You can get on a real nice hardtail 26" wheel bike or even step up into their entry level 29" wheel bikes.

The Rockhopper is the model that fits your budget the most.  They range in price from $600 to just over $1000 for both 26 and 29 inch wheels.  They come stock with decent components and should provide you a few years of solid riding.

Even if you don't go with Specialized, make sure to visit your local bike shops.  Search for local mountain bike message boards and ask people there.  Also, a lot of bike shops will host demo days on a local trail.  That's a great time to get the feel of what a bike feels like on the trails.

Just watch out -- it's an addicting sport and your next bike will be considerably more than $1000 :)

  2. you have high budget so no diamondback response sport they run for about 350 - 450 but there are better bike so i would go with

    trek 6000=$879.99

    specilzed Rockhopper Comp Disc =940

    speciled rockhopper disc = 700

also look at some 29inch bikes there good to

  3. Before you ask, you should at least do some research  There is a plethra of options in that price range.  Go to your local bike shops and find what they have there in that price range.  Test ride them all.
