What kind of mulch is best for a border garden?

what properties should I look for? for example, I saw some rubber kind. And how much can one bag cover? thanks so much.

  1. Peashingle gives the garden a relaxed, informal feel.

    Glass chippings suit a very formal garden.

    Wood/bark chippings conjure up a woodland garden feel.

  2. Never use wood mulch up against your house. It can cause Termites. Use gravel, it lasts much longer.

  3. All mulches help to conserve moisture in the soil, and reduce the number of weed seeds that germinate.  That's the primary function, and they all do it.

    Which on is purely aesthetics.  The one you like the look of is the one that is best for you.  Go to your local garden center - the good ones will have samples of the different mulches they carry, to help you choose.
