My team of young roller and inline skaters are going to do a spring group show... What kinds of musical numbers would be fun for them to do and others to watch? We want to attract young people and entertain older people.

  1. Serious suggestion that's a bit off-topic: When you get your show together, check with your local roller derby league and see if they'd be interested in having you as the halftime show.

We've had our local skate-dance/jam skating group do our halftime two or three times. The crowd loves 'em. They're called the Vegas Heat.

Find your nearest derby league at:

Ignore the incomplete map at the top, head down to the list of states and cities below it.

  2. how about a "rocking through the ages" kind of theme? start out with songs from the 20s and end your show with today's hit music. the skaters can dress up as people from different decades too. my sister 's school did this and it was a huge hit. good luck!

  3. what about a disney theame!

    las vagas theame

    travel

    bugs

    hope this helped

  4. Try listening to Route 66 by the Cheetah Girls...

  5. It seems to be best if you start with a common theme that makes sense to your audience.  For example, music through the years....start with the 50's, 60's, 70's, etc...incorporate disco, jive, blues and on an on.  Or just highlight one musical era.  But be careful that your theme isn't too vague.  A club in my area did their annual show, but most people who went to see it said it wasn't that good...part of the reason being they didn't have a good connecting them.  Each "level" of skaters did their own thing and didn't play off one another.  It seemed very disorganized and disjointed.  One group did Madonna, one did Andrew Lloyd Webber, other's did random stuff.  (People also complained that the coaches/choreographers of the show gave themselves solos, which was tacky.)  Disney themes work well, but are used very often.  Decide if you want your show to be a group of separate numbers or if you want it to tell a story.  The Wizard of Oz might be fun because it's a story everyone is familiar with, so if it's condensed for a show, it still tells the story.  I always thought Phantom of the Opera would be neat to make into a skating show.  Or what about using a Hairspary theme?  With the re-make of the original recently coming out, the story has been re-introduced to a new generation, so it will appeal to multiple age groups.  Take a few ideas from the movie and since a lot of it takes place on a movie set (a small space), the production may lend itself well to a rink surface.  The movie is mostly music, so there isn't a lot of time left for just line/acting.  Costumes may also be kind of fun, using retro styles and bright colors -- and cool 60's hair styles.  Good luck and have fun with it!  :)
