Question:

What kind of new cat will be the best match for my 2 year-old cat?

I have a 2 year-old male tabby. He's very sweet and affectionate, but he definitely views the apartment and everyone in it as "his." Before I took over care of him, he lived in a home with another cat and two dogs, and got along well with them. So, he has lived with other animals but has been living as the only pet for the past year. I'm giving serious thought to getting another cat so he has a friend. Does anyone know from experience or research what kind of new cat I should get? A kitten or an older cat? A male or female? Thank you!

  1. I would get a male kitten.  We recently adopted a 4 month old male and my male Maine Coon who is 10 really likes him!  They have become friends and I expect the relationship to be even better with time.

Here's an article you might find helpful:

    Good Luck!

  2. it all depends on the breed of cat he is! is he breed for this or that!

  3. I had 2 1 year old rag doll cats and I  just got 3 rag doll kittens..at first there was a lot of hissing but now ( a couple of days later) they get a long perfectly! The kittens are 2 girls and 1 boy. Good luck!

  4. I would say a submissive female (spayed) younger ... say 1 yr old.

  5. I'd get a spayed female kitten or older cat that was raised with other cats. Cats generally have to be raised with other cats to get along, so getting an adult cat that has been raised an "only cat" would potentially cause fights. Good luck!

  6. The tabby now only starting to be an adult would prefer a female kitten.

(heard of the term, daddys girl?)

Your tabby will have his "dominance" over the kitten because shes young and because the females automatically will accept that the male in the house is the "boss".

Just make sure you get a cat house, or something that is JUST the first cats, or else he will feel neglected.

  7. Needless to say, getting another cat may not be the best idea. If he views you as "his" like you say, getting a buddy might make him feel severely rejected by you. But if you do, there is going to some fighting between the two. Put the new cat in a crate somewhere where the former cat goes least, and let them get used to each other for about a week before introducing them under supervision.  Also, try to ignore the new cat just a little bit, so your other cat will know you still love him.

  8. I would get a spayed female, older or younger.  If your cat is mischievous, I would suggest getting an older cat, so then it can teach yours properly.  Before you do buy another cat though, I would play with it and check out it's personality.  Even if it's not the cutest cat there, at least you know that your cats may get along.

  9. I'd say that you should get a young kitten since your cat seems very sweet natured.  Perhaps a tabby?  Maybe try getting a very energetic one from the humane society?  Just suggestions.

  10. here are some sites.

if you will get a female cat they will probably reproduce.

so maybe get a male cat.
