You are on a boat on the ocean, and are interested in your position.  Both the sun and moon happen to be visible, and you have a sextant.  By measuring their positions as angles above the horizon, you can determine your location.

I'm afraid today every kind of data involves numbers.

I work in the language field; you might tell me that has nothing to do with numbers, well you are wrong; we collect texts and records and then we count frequency of certain structure then we do a bit of statistics work and finally we come with results that will tell us about the character of those who wrote the text

So if you are using the word X that means so and so; while if you are using the word Y that means something different....

that might sound boring but it is not!

if you master the technique you can even predict what others will say or do!

keep in mind that if master number you can master the world but don't let number master you!

Survey research often deals with numbers. This is just one example of quantitative research methods (research that is interested in numbers).  Survey research is used to study many things such as childhood outcomes in public housing.  In this example, researchers may ask how times have you and your child moved in public housing? How many schools has your child attended? What kind of grades has your child received while in elementary school? ...and so on. All of the responses to these questions could be quantified or turn into a number.  I hope this helps.
