What kind of oil and how much for a yamaha r1?

im tryin to do an oil change on my '99 yamaha r1. what kind of oil does everybody reocommend I put into it? and how many quarts do I need to buy?

  1. The above comments are great if you are even using synthetic. But even if you are using dyno, stay away from the ones that say friction modifiers or any fancy c**p about extra formulated protection, high mileage or the other.

    I used Havoline 20W50 on my last oil change. When the weather drops back below about 80 consistently, I'll switch back to 10W40.


  2. LNAF is correct, "friction modifiers" in some synthetics can wreak havoc on your clutch...

    I've used rotella on all of my bikes, and have never had an issue....

    regular mobil 1 will work well also (not high mileage, not fuel saver)

  3. Just a warning - DON'T use automobile synthetic oil.  Both Mobil1 and Valvoline web site says that.

    Mobil1 makes special motorcycle synthetic oil.
