  1. JD is wrong, I don't believe Johnson&Evinrude made 4 stroke outboards until at least mid to late 1990's (95 to 98).

Using regular automotive motor oil on a 2 stroke outboard is asking for disaster.  It does not lubricate the inner parts in an outboard because it seperates from the gas, thus the engine will go without lubrication and will soon seize.

I also agree with jtexas, make sure you use at least a TWC-3 certified 2-cycle oil.  Even though he might side with the Wal-Mart brand on the affordable reason, I recommend going with Quicksilver Premium 2-cycle oil.  It's a bit more expensive, but I never buy the cheap crud, even when I'm on a budget when boating.

Never run any boat or PWC motor out of the water, not even one second without water being delivered to it by a flushing system.  Also, as he mentioned never go above 1500 RPM's without the hub submerged and under load, or risk major engine damage.

  2. im guessing its a four stoke and any motor oil will work fine try for a sae 5w-30 or sae 10w-30 dont get the cheap stuff tho

  3. 3 cylinder carbureted 2-stroke, one of the most reliable outboard motors ever made.

Any oil as long as it is "TCW3" certified.  I use supertech from walmart.

If the VRO oiling system has been disconnected, mix the oil with the fuel in a 50:1 ratio - 1/3 cup per gallon, 1 pint per six gallons.

If the VRO is still hooked up, just keep the oil reservoir topped off.

Use only 87 octane gasoline - higher octanes just lead to less complete burn.

Use only champion QL77JC4 gapped at .030 - not just a personal brand preference, johnnyrudes really do run better with champs.

Never start the engine without supplying water to the lower unit - 45 seconds of dry running will damage the water pump impeller.

Never rev the engine over 1500 or so (except as needed to warm up a cold engine) without the lower unit submerged -- it needs backpressure on the exhaust to avoid thermal runaway.

If you don't know the age of the water pump impeller, or if its more than two years, change it now - fairly simple operation but the downside of pump failure is catastrophic.

Just a little bit of care is all it needs, it'll still be running long after we're gone.

    Have fun!

  4. tcw-3    2 cycle

50 to 1  thats 15.36 oz of oil to 6 gallons of gas

  5. Mix 50:1

That's one pint of oil for every six gallons of gas.

Use a branded Johnson/Evinrude outboard oil, or outboard oil designated TCW3.

Don't use the oil JD suggests, it will wreck your engine.
