We have a boat that we are trying to sell and we drained the oil to clean it out, we need to put oil in it but are unsure of what kind of oil to use. Both the inboard and outboard are OMC and it is a .25 liter engine.

  1. SAE 30 weight.  But make sure you DONT get the non-detergent stuff, thats for lawn mowers.

  2. If you live farther north than Missouri, you can probably use just 10W-30 or 10W-40 high quality motor oil (NON-synthetic).  If you live about the latitude of Missouri or farther south, you need to use 25W-40 oil since a thicker oil is needed for the regular hot summer operating conditions.

However, for Mercrusier sterndrive engines, I only recommend using Mercury 25W-40 oil unless told otherwise by certified Merc tech.

  3. For the engine, OMC recomends straight SAE30 Motor oil., NOT 5W, 10W, 15W, etc. Just plain old SAE 30.

In the outdrive use Marine Grade Lower Unit Gear Oil. It doesn't really matter what kind as long as it says Marine Lower Unit Oil, unless you have electric shift. Then use Type C.

  4. Your safe with 30 W high detergent oil.  Any brand is OK!  Good luck!   This is for the engine only.  If you need oil for the sterndrive, check with a local marine dealer for lower uint oil.
