What kind of oil should I use on a shapening stone?

And should I push the blade forward across the stone? I am trying to sharpen kitchen knives and pocket knives.

Just plain 3in1 oil is fine or just plain 30 weight motor oil will work.

As for the direction you should run the blade across the stone, run the blade across the stone as if you were trying to slice a very thin slice off of it.

you should use macine oil,the kind they sell in small one or two ozcans,usally for sewing machines..
