  1. most places will let u out of a contract w proof of orders. we do it all the time. THe cell phone may b tricky but ask em. The satellite co. normally pauses ur services till u return

  2. you should have joind the french foriegn legion instead! otherwise wise cancell all contracts and get legal advice from HR captain

  3. ask the military...they have all the answers..

  4. I'd call all your service providers, tell them your situation and see what they say.  If you get someone who says they can't help you break the contracts without a fee, try calling back another time.  Sometimes the morons on the phone lines have no idea who is offered even within their own company.

EDIT:  I hope October isn't right.  There would be something seriously wrong if he was... but some how it wouldn't surprise me.

  5. YOU didn't have enough intelligence to figure this out for yourself?!

YOU should have contacted all the companies that you have business with and informed them that you are going into the Navy.

  6. My suggestion is trying to get as much as information as you could before making any decision, here is a good resourece.http://carinsurance.expertsupport.info/a...

  7. Going into the navy wont release you from responsibility from those thing.  They will catch up to you.

  8. You have to have car insurance if you have a car....  If no one is driving the car, and I mean NO-ONE, tell your insurance and they will reduce the rates.  It'll still be a small fee - but you have to have insurance.  Once you are going to drive the car again you must call your insurance company beforehand and get your policy back to driving status.

You can't actually "get away" with anything...  Cell phone, they will put on hold if you are not going to use it - most companies will not cut your contract without the fee unless you are going to a country (for 2 years or longer) where they do not provide service.  Direct TV, I dunno - but cable companies will let you out of the contract with your orders.

  9. My son's military recruiter for the marines told him about 15 yrs ago that  If you are going over seas there was something called the sailors and soldiers act that meant you didnot have to make a car payment while he was overseas. He didn't make one for about 9 months. ( I am thinking that he didn't have to when he was in basic training either not sure.    Ask your recruiter he will help you. And to all the other answers out there. Sound like no military people out there amoung them.   if you go over seas to fight for your country.  I think you have a right to defer your payments while overseas/ It's not like you are getting great pay in the military, Anymore you have buy some  military clothing supplies, and equipment.  So if you get a break on your bills. I feel you should, after all you will probable go to Iraq where every nasty bug that crawls  or bites is there.  While the rest of us sleep comfy in our beds I. wish you the best  of luck . You have my thanks and respect for serving in the military.

  10. Military service takes precedence.  You need to let these companies know what's happening, but they will understand.

  11. It is not breaking a contract.  It is invoking the military clause of the contract.  If the contract has a military clause you simply use it.  If not,  then you are stuck with the contract.   Do not think the military will back you up if you break contracts.

  12. you can get out of the lease, the cell phone contract and the DirecTV.  NOT the car insurance or payment, unless you sell  the car.  you must invoke SSCRA.  they may also require you to keep the contract until yoru ship date.

If ANYONE else is on any of those contracts, however, THEY do not get out of the contract just because you enlisted.

Beach: never advocate not paying on bills.   entering military service DOES NOT absolve you from paying yoru just and legal debts.   SSCRA can reduce the interest to 6%, can waive late fees and provide other protections, but you are STILL obligated to pay  your bills.

also, any debt acquired AFTER enlisting is not covered(save for the reduction of interste to 6% during a deployment).
