I am an 18 year-old girl travelling from Washington DC to London (5 days) to Berlin (5 days) to London (3 days) to Cornwall (6 weeks) to Delhi (3 weeks) to Bangkok (3 weeks) to Australia (university for 3 years!). I need to know what size backpack I should buy (I'm leaning toward 60 litres, but that might be too much) and what kind of pack would be best for my travels. So far I've looked at REI and North Face, the both look fine and most of their packs are in my price range (around $200). Help!

  1. You should go to a store and try packs on. Rick Steeves sells a nice pack and one that his day pack latches on to. In any event, I would get one that you have the option of wheeling. You will be traveling a lot before your finaly destination and lugging a heavy pack can be back breaking. Make sure you have something smaller with you that you can use day to day and leave the big pack in the hotel. Have a good time.

  2. I think 60l would be about right.  Make sure to try the pack on at the store.  Not all packs are made for all people.  It's important that your pack fit right for such a long trip.

Check out Eagle Creek and Deuter as well.  They make great packs.  www.eaglecreek.com, www.deuterusa.com
