my house has not been repainted in years and needs a complete paint job. what kind of paint do i use for the exterior and interior of my house? i know semi-gloss is recommended for the kitchen and the bathroom but what about the bedrooms/living room? can semi-gloss be used for the rooms as well? we have humidity in the house (mold problems we're currently fixing) so it's important that we lower the humidity as much as possible. i would also like the walls interior and exterior to dirty less easily. is there egg shell for the exterior? what kind of paints should i use? thanks!

  1. Okay, first of all what kind of paint is on your walls inside and what kind was used on the exterior?  In other words was it oil or latex?  This is very important so as not to create a pealing effect.  If any were painted with a latex paint then you must continue to buy latex.  Oil over latex will peal or have an adverse reaction.  You can take a chip of paint to your dealer to determine what was used.  If you are using latex, then I would suggest a semi-gloss latex paint for inside your home.  It wipes up and cleans very well.  A gloss would show every defect there is on your walls.  Semi-gloss can be used in every room of the house.  As far as the exterior, it is just a matter of preference.  A semi-gloss is good there as well.   For mold or mildew problems, use X14 or similar to remove the mold first.  Then they sell a primer at the store which helps with mold on those very stained spots. I at the moment can't think of its name.  Oh yes, Calsum Coat or similar.

  2. I would go to a Benjamin Moore Paint store!!!  They have great products

  3. If you go to a paint store such as Sherwin-Williams to purchase the paint. They will help you to determine what type of paints are better for the exterior or interior based on the material used on your home. This will include little charts and books to help you - it also has color ranges and complementary colors for trim and stuff like that.

My experiences with Sherwin-Williams have been great. They have been helpful and they take the time to help you find the color that you want - (getting you to also look at light levels and all that stuff). We painted over paneling and they walked us through it - by explaining to us how to do it (clean / sand a little - it was glossy / prime / then paint). We did it and it worked out well - room looked better than expected.
