Question:

What kind of paint should I use to paint a Rubik's Cube?

The stickers on the rubiks cube are crappy and keep peeling off (I don't know why they don't just paint them in the first place instead of using crappy square stickers). So instead of having to keep buying new Rubik's cubes I want to paint my cube my self. I've heard Vinyl dye would be the best, but I'm trying to keep it cheap. Need 6 different colors to paint the cube successfully. The cube is made out of plastic as you may have guessed. Thanks.

  1. The plastics used to make the cube are designed to be flexible so they last longer (won't crack). This means they won't hold paints that are readily available to you in stores.

An epoxy type paint might do the job but they are expensive and  you will need 6 different colors.

The suggestion to purchase replacement stickers is a very good one and will be your best bet for a long term fix.

  2. An enamel type paint woule work well. You can find it in craft stores where ever they have model cars, planes, etc. It's durable and will last with all the handling.

  3. Try nail polish.  Cheap and effective. Sand the blocks lightly so you get a good bond.  Once the colors are dry, follow up with a clear coat of polish to seal it.

  4. You can consider buying replacement stickers or tiles for your cube. They last long and my tiles had lasted me more than 7 months, and they look as new as ever. You can buy them at an affordable price at cubesmith. They are definitely better than painting your cube.
