Where can I get information about what I can and cannot do? I mean, do I have to apply for residence visa? I don't think I'm looking correctly for it.

After I graduate, I want to move to Mexico for one year. I want to know if there is a strict process or some heavy guidelines I need to follow so that I can come back with no problems.

  1. You can go to Mexico for 180 days (6 months) on just a tourist card which you can get on the plane or at the bordr.  You  would have to return to the states for a day or two, then return for another 6 months on a new tourist card.  The card costs about $22.00 USD and there are no special requirements to get it.  Or, you may go to a Mexican consulate in the U.S. and apply for an FM3 visa.  This alows you to stay and reside in Mexico for a full year.  It costs about $148.00.  You must show proof that you have a steady source of income of about $1200.00 a month or have at least one year's worth of income in the bank to support yourself with.  You will also need a passport.  The tourist card would probably be best for you.  You CANNOT work or attend school in Mexico if you are there on a tourist card, or even if you have an FM3...unless you apply for and receive a work permit or student permit also.  Work permits are nearly impossible to obtain.  you must find an employer  to offer you a job and write a letter stating that he cannot find a Mexican national to fill the job. Jobs pay VERY little in Mexico....even for college educated professionals.  See websites below for information on how to apply for a visa if you decide to do that and a list of Mexican Consulates in the U.S.  also the site to go to for all passport info.
