  1. As of now...I'm the owner of an Congo African Grey and a Blue Front Amazon.  I have in the past had canary's, budgies, cockatiels, finches and cockatoo's.  If you want a talker, although it's not a 100% the bird will talk, I would definately go with the grey or a bird from the Amazon family.  Now I adore all birds...I do believe you should do some research on the birds you are leaning towards.  And do get a hand fed hand reared baby.  It makes it so much easier to have a bird you can handle right away.  Now my Amazon does not talk, go figure.  See what I'm saying, ya just never know.  She's 10 and a wonderful bird.  She does whistle quite well.  My Grey, well ya can't shut him up if you tried.  He's 8 and says hundreds of words, sentances, letters, numbers, songs. All kinds of weird things come out of that birds beak...My Amazon is much more lovable, the Grey you can handle him well, just not as lovable.  They are like children, honestly, all different personalities.  Now price is very varied by the birds you have mentioned.  I paid $1200. for my Blue and $950. for my Grey.  That was in 1998 & 2000.  And then the cost of your cage.  Bigger bird, bigger cage, and more money.  It is an investment that will last, well, for a very long time.  It does pay to buy the biggest & best cage you can afford for any bird you do get.  Hope I helped in some way.  This is my personal experience.

  2. the parrots are the most personable.. and the cockatoos.  cockatoos are real friendly-like.

myna birds are cool ,too- but act more like a bluejay, than a buddy-bird.

  3. I'd go with a conure. They're small, cute, smart, playful, and not quite as complicated to care for as larger birds like greys and amazons.

  4. Don't get a parakeet. They're annoying as h**l, I had some, &they weren't very delightful pets.

I'd get an African Grey, those are pretty.

  5. I wouldn't suggest getting a parrot as your first bird as there are many different problems that can happen because of them(not saying they are bad birds but they are difficult to care for) http://mytoos.com/

  6. I have an Amazon and he is awesome. I was always kind of scared of birds and never really wanted one. My boyfriend bought this one and surprised me with it. Now I absolutely love him. He is so friendly and social. Sometimes he is too social and we can't get him to be quiet. Just remember that if you get a large parrot it is likely to out live you, so that is a big commitment.

  7. I have 2 male Cockatiels and they are a joy to have and keep me going they talk and laugh and whistle and even try to keep me from leaving they are too cute...and I love them....but since you don't want Cockatiels then go with either one of these on this list..they are pretty.

    Hyacinth Macaw

    Spix's Macaw

    Lear's Macaw

    African Grey Parrot

    Amazon Parrot

    Princess Parrot

    Blue-Headed Parrot

    Australian King Parrot

    Red-Humped Parrot

    Bourke's Parrot

    Ragent Parrot

    Eclectus Parrot

  8. There are so many things to consider when purchasing a parrot.

First of all, what is your budget? A love bird can be a few hundred dollars while an African Grey can be a thousand dollars or more.

The parrots you listed are different sizes, and will need different cages and different levels of care. While a ringneck parakeet might only need it's wings clipped once every year, an Amazon needs theirs clipped more often - same with their nails.

Also, how much are you going to be home? I know that a lot of people think that birds are just there for us to look at and be pretty, but parrots are extremely smart and are much like human toddlers. Larger parrots need a lot of care and affection!

Do you have other pets? Sometimes dogs can upset birds and if you have a hunting dog, be forewarned that if the dog did not grow up with the bird, the dog has hunting instincts to kill the bird at first chance - same with cats.

Do you get grossed out easily? You need to change the papers in the bottom of your parrot's cage quite frequently - especially if it's a larger parrot. Can you afford medical emergencies if they arise? If you thought it was expensive to take a puppy in for shots, wait until you get a bill for taking your parrot  in to a vet - and good luck finding a specialist who deals with parrots if you are too scared to clip their wings or nails yourself.

That's another thing: Will you clip your parrot's wings? If not, you need to parrot proof your whole house if you will let it fly around. Watch out for ceiling fans and expensive furniture!!

I could seriously go on for hours about all the things to consider before purchasing a parrot. They yell in the morning and they yell in the evening. They "cry out" to the other parrots in the jungle, so to speak.

However, all the birds you listed here would make good pets providing you put 100% into taking care of them. Neglected birds can become depressed and difficult pets to have in the household. Spoiled birds can control you by screaming and biting. Please do a lot of reading before buying a bird, however, good luck on your choice. You won't be disappointed - parrots are beautiful and amazing pets.

Edit: I wonder if the person below me knows that Hyacinth Macaws are about $10,000....

    I'm guessing not.

  9. its depends do you have time for the bird, are you able to afford a cage, will you give it oplenty of attention if so get an african grey they are the best talkers or if you are looking for somthing with colour get a macaw. if you dont have alot of time on ur hands or $$ get a lovebird. better yet get a parrotlet they are aprox 4inch long and are true parrots they can not scream so the are perfect for apartment dwellers and they make low noise and are really cute and smart and can learn how to talk. my male is sitting on my knee chirping away right now.

  10. parrakeet they are cool
