  1. Pencils would be better. But you can use any type of pencil or pen.

    Good luck man.

  2. A number 2 pencil works really well.

  3. I use a pencil or a green pen and, where useful, I use a green highlighter.  "Why green?", you might ask.  Green is the complimentary color to red and stands out quite nicely under the red glow of cockpit lighting at night.

I learned that lesson as a young and stupid 2LT when I marked my topo in bright red during daylight in preparation for an anticipated night move.  I was shocked to discover that all my pretty red marks and notes disappeared when I whipped out my nifty red-lensed flashlight at 0100 hrs.

  4. Pencil--not pen.  And a good soft eraser.

  5. I use a pencil so I can erase it.  They also make some take you can put on your charts that you can easily pull off.

    Good luck on the exam!

  6. Today I fly with a GPS moving map and all flight planning is done on the PC. But I have also sailed for over 45 years, using a sextant, Decca and now GPS. I have always drawn on the charts with a normal HB grade pencil. A light touch is enough and easy to erase.

    Good luck with your exam!
