  1. Don't worry :0)

Amstelveen is a really nice area (I live closeby).  It is a very green area with open spaces, close to the Amstel River and also to Amsterdam's woods (area with lots of trees, shade).  The shopping centre is really nice there http://www.stadshartamstelveen.nl/ and it is only 20-30 mins from Amsterdam Centraal station with great connections by tram and bus.

Most of all, Amstelveen has a really big population of foreign expats living in the area (because of it being a nice area close to Amsterdam and also having lots of International companies in the area).  The main groups are American & Japanese.  Amstelveen has the largest population of Japanese in the Netherlands in fact.  There is a page in English from the town hall here http://www.amstelveen.nl/web/show?id=444...

So being a foreigner in this area is not as intimidating as others areas/countries.  There are lots of gyms, swimming pools, and clubs where you can meet people.  You have the advantage of having your friend here as well

There are also groups (although I am not sure about Macedonian) where people from certain nationalities meet up.  There are several sites for this, and also with lots of info on living in the Netherlands and general info e.g. http://www.expatica.com/nl/main.html

When you come over, try to enrol on a Dutch class.  Firstly it will help you intergate a bit more, understand what is going on, and also you will meet people in a similar situation as yourself! People are generally very friendly and helpful if you are the same.  If you try with Dutch (even if you feel silly or they return in English) it is appreciated

The main thing is don't worry.  You are coming to a really nice country, great people and a lovely area with lots to explore and do.  I am sure you will be fine.

    Best of luck
