There are two kinds.  There are the climatologists, who analyze atmospheric and other data.  Then you have the neo-conservatives, or fascists, who try to simplify the complexities of twenty first century life to conform to a bronze age political philosophy.  You may be confused as they often refer to themselves as Republicans or Conservatives, but their relationship to those things is about the same as the relationship of Jeffrey Dahmer to the Diners Club.

Psychics, mystics, soothsayers, and climatologist all do pretty much the same thing.

The people I work with (I'm not a scientist) all have PhD's in Upper Atmosphere physics (10 total) two used to be Astronomers and changed fields a decade ago the rest all specialize in various layers of the atmosphere, The leader of our group studies Cosmic rays and Solar activity.
