I'm going to Key Largo soon, and wanted to know what kind of permit(s) would I need to get before I could legally obtain tropical reef fish for my new saltwater tank. And about what price range are we talking?

  1. In Florida you are allowed to collect with a saltwater fishing license. There are strict limits. If you are driving down stop at the Bass Pro Shop Ft Lauder-dale-Miami it's just off I-95 you will see signs for sports fishing hall of fame Bass Pro is right next door. I'm telling you about Bass Pro because they will be the most likely place to still have Florida saltwater sports fishing pamphlet.

I collect for my tank every year in the Keys.

  2. License Requirement: A Florida recreational saltwater fishing license (resident or non-resident, whichever is applicable).

Here's a link to the the license costs: http://myfwc.com/license/#SWF

Here's a link to the FWC website concerning Recreational harvest of marine life species:

If it's not what your looking for you can ask them... They have a button at the top of the page that says "Ask FWC". I ask them alot of questions, they usually respond in a day or two as long as the question isn't asked just before the weekend and they're pretty nice about things.
