I have to be in Hongkong by August 15 but I might not get my I-131 biometric appointment date by then. What type of plane ticket should I get so maybe I can get my money back or be able to change flight dates

  1. The ideal ticket for you to buy would be a fully refundable ticket, which would allow you to get a refund if necessary.

This ticket is also likely to be the most expensive ticket, and it wouldn't be my first choice if I were in your situation.  One of the things you will need to be aware of is the change fees and penalties associated with your ticket.  This is the time to go see the travel agent in person and pay the service fee to make sure you get the right ticket for your situation.

You're probably going to be better off getting an advance purchase ticket that you can change if necessary.  If you get to fly out on your ideal date - you got the cheaper ticket and life is good.  If not, you will pay a change fee (up to $250) and the difference in fare for the new ticket.  The key here is that the change fee and the upfare is likely going to be less of a cost to you than buying the full-fare ticket with the flexibility.  The only way I wouldn't do this would be if you were looking to not travel at all if you couldn't get your preferred date.

I'm going to reinforce, however, that this is one of those situations where going to a travel agent can save you money in the long run (even with paying service fees in the short run) by having someone who knows the ins and outs of the process and which fares are going to give you the most flexibility for the least cost.

    Good luck, and safe travels!
