  1. The basic types of planes are passenger, fighter, bomber, spy, air refuel, and cargo planes. Of these there are 1000's of variations and combinations. Don't know how specific your looking for but that's the basics.

  2. First of all, this seems to be a question that is very general, so let me first answer you through it's simple definition. An airplane is an aircraft designed to travel in/on the air which achieves flight through the forward movement of it's airfoils or in simple terms it's fixed wings and basically composes of an airframe, landing gear, powerplant, empennage and tail section.

Following your question about what kind of planes are there in the world today, well, there are several categories.

a.) TYPE OF ENGINE OR POWERPLANT

Airplanes in use today, generally use 3 types of powerplant. The reciprocating engine which is similar to the ones you see on automotives, with cylinders and such although very much diffirent and a lot more powerful and compact. You will usually see this on lighter and smaller aircrafts such as the Cessna 172.

The Gas turbine engine.- a familiar name is the JET engine, which uses a powerplant which has a compressor assembly, which rapidly draws air in, compresses it, injects it with raw fuel, ignites it and purges it at the rear end, providing thrust which is extremely superior to that of the reciprocating types although it's use is uneconomical at slower speeds thus limiting it's use for supersonic aircrafts. You will usually see this on miitary aircrafts such as the F18.

The third is hybrid ones or a sort fo combination of both:

one kind is the turbo prop. Basically it's a gas turbine engine which has a drive shaft connected to a propeller. It's use is generally seen on modern light high performance airplanes. It was seen to combine the advantages of gas turbine engine technology in terms of power and reliability, and the propeller usage, making it economical to use at lower speeds compared to jet engines. Another type of this kind is the Turbofan. Here, instead of a propeller, a fan is attached to the drive shaft of a gas turbine engine. You will commonly see this on large widebody aircrafts used by major airline industries. The purpose of the fan is to create a large volume of bypass air which provides 80 percent of the thrust put into actual use. For the case of large widebody aircraft, it is more economical to have a large amount of air moving relatively slowly, than a small amount of air moving rapidly. It's common sense, seeing the sheer size of those planes.

There are onther categories such as it's USE and type of Construction. I will just enumerate it here and not discuss it thoroughly for I don't just have the time right now.

    USE

    a. CIVIL or Private Airplanes

    b. Military Airplanes

    c. GLIDERS/UNPOWERED AIRPLANES

    d. EXPERIMENTAL AIRPLANES

    e. AEROBATIC AIRPLANES

    f. GENERAL AVIATION AIRPLANES

    CONSTRUCTION

    a. TRUSS

    b. MONOCOQUE

    c. SEMI-MONOCOQUE

As you can see, your question about the kind of airplanes are vast and very general. but hope i helped!

  3. There are literally thousands of aircraft types.  Please do an internet search on "types of aircraft."

  4. where to begin...

  5. Most of them are designed to actually use some sort of propulsion and wings so that the power of the propulsion unit overcomes gravity by creating enough upward low air pressure over the wings so that the plane will actually LIFT into the air given enough speed to overcome the forces of gravity...  These are USUALLY called "GOOD PLANES."

Sometimes, these PLANES recieve their propulsion from other PLANES and/or other means of getting into the AIR and then are RELEASED and can slowly descend at a contolled rate - these are sometimes refered to as "GOOD GLIDER PLANES."   - although some of both of these types of PLANES MAY be defective and or fail and succumb to the forces of gravity occasionally resulting in becoming "UNEXPECTEDLY BAD PLANES", but you hope that is not the case.  These are also somtimes refered as "PREVIOUSLY GOOD BUT NOW BAD PLANES."

I know there are others that sit on the ground ALL THE TIME that were and/or are poorly designed or poorly maintained and do not meet the previous criteria - these are often defined as "NOT VERY GOOD PLANES" and if they are VERY POOR in this situation, they might be called "NON-FLYING PLANES"...

Some will consider 'MODEL" PLANES... but I tend to think of PLANES as vehicles that will ATTEMPT to lift or hold a person within or upon their frame in the AIR with them...  of course, my definitions are probably slightly more lax than more FORMAL definitions...

And there are other NON-AIR LIFTIING devices that are called PLANES that, for example, are used for 'WOOD WORKING' and 'CONSRUCTION GRADIENTS" but these are beyond my scope of knowledge and I will leave these to be further described by an expert in the field of "NON-AIR PLANE" PLANES.

  6. there are  thousands of types of planes  i am more versed in the military planes  they have about every type of  you could think of .

bombers  which airplanes used to drop tons of bombs on enemies it can hit  80 targets in a single pass  with 500 lb bombs and fly up to 6000 without refueling and cann carry 50,000 in 2 internal bays . and is almost undetactable on radar there are other bombers  this is just the most technological one.

there are cargo planes  the biggest one is the c5a galaxy used by the airforce that can carry a whole lot of cargo with a loaded weight of 769,000 lbs  plus a crew of 73  it is one of the largest and most useful cargo planes .

there are fighters the most technoligically  of these is the f-22raptor which is asid to be the most productive fighter in the world. which can have an attack angle higher than 60 degrees and can maiantain it. the communication  changes  frequencies a thousand times per second. it even uses some of the same material used by the b2 to apppear less visiable on radar. the radar has a range of up to 250 miles.

helicopters the black hawk helicopter is one of the more well known ones now tecniclly a helicopter is not a plane  but it still flies  it is a assault or utlity chopper it can carry an extra 2600 lbs and up to 14 troops and up to 4 extra fuel tanks . another interesting helicopter is the chinook which is a heavy lift helicopter capable of carrying 28,000 lbs .

i know there are many aircraft i didnt cover like paasenger planes, unmanned spy planes ,tanker planes and the list goes on  here is a site that has more info on military type planes http://www.military-art-land.com/aviatio...  i hope  this helped .

  7. Single engine or multiple engine fixed wing aircraft (usualy propeller driven).  Single or multiple engine swept wing aircraft (usualy jets, commercial or military). Gliders (town behind plane until desired speed and alt is reached then released).  Rotary (Helicopters) which use a rotating wing to create lift.  They do not push off of the ground as some may think.   Derrigibles (these are lighter than air vehicles usualy filled with helium or hydrogen).  People launched from catapults....they fly not so good.
