  2. It really depends on how well-tuned the car is and whether it is an older car or a late-model vehicle, and it also depends on the fuel used as the additives (detergents, lubricants, octane boosters etc) and impurities (such as sulphur) can have a dramatic effect on the emissions.

    A well-tuned late-model car using low-sulphur fuel will emit trace amounts of nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide.  More than 99% of the emissions are harmless, mostly water vapour (burning 10 gallons of gas produces 9 gallons of water) and carbon dioxide.  A poorly tuned car will emit substantial amounts of hydrocarbons and carbon monoxide.
