Question:

What kind of preparations should the Philippines have in order to win a medal in the 2012 London Olympics?

After 16 days of intense and memorable moments of sports competition, the 2008 Beijing Olympics came to a close with the Philippines failing to bring home a single medal unlike Southeast Asian neighbors Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam, all of which bagged at least a silver. What can be done so that in the next Olympics this 2012 in London, England, we have more chances of winning a medal and maybe even finally bring home our first gold?

  1. Preparation is very important.  We have to be preparing right now and train athletes starting right now and provide them support be it government or NGO.  Athletes must have the dedication and so do the trainors/coaches and the Philippine team itself.  Support must not only come from the government but also to other sectors as well.

  2. Why bother?  Our government doesn't care. They just want to march down the runway and show to the world that The Philippines exist and is still part of the international community. Marching with the athletes during any ceremony doesn't make them patriots. They just want to use taxpayer's money to travel for free and spend OUR money for their own frivolities. Come on now, wake up. Stop dreaming BIG.  Unless, YOU make a stand now and support our athletes, it won't happen.

  3. Days left before London 2012 Olympics: 1432

The country has 1432 days left to train Filipino athletes. Philippine government must cooperate well with the sports association here. Honestly, the Philippines lacks on training and sports facilities (some of the athletes sent by the country were trained in the US).

Soar high, Team Philippines! Go for gold!

(And there's a rumor that the country is planning to bid for the 2024 Olympics...a gold medal might help the country...)

  4. 1. Get all the World Record times from previous olympic.

    2. Those who pledges to give millions for the gold medallist/s instead offer their money unconditionally for the training of the athletes.

    3. For the athlete who couldn't matched or surpassed the worlds records during training would not be allowed to compete so we can save money bringing the 'unqualified' athletes.

    4. I'm sure once we get gold medal, money will come in to those successful.

  5. The best way for Philippines to win medals in the next olympics is good government budget, If theirs a good budget then the outcome would be different. Theirs a good training & hiring experience coaches.

For me I think boxing is the only hope for winning the gold for the Phils., If you think of long jumps, track and field, hurdles etc. Take a look at the length of their legs, wow! man when they run theirs no way short leg asian can catch up with that.

  6. As a filipino... from america.

We should train harder, breathe faster and give it your all. I know many talented swimmers in the Philippines. Its also very hard to compete with all these countries, when we dont have enough supplies or tools to practice. Since practice makes perfect. I pray one day the Philippines will be known and get a single medal, bronze, silver or gold :)

  7. intense training and support from the government.i think support is totally lacking here.also if they could start incorporating intense training in sports in schools then filipinos could start at an early age and develop to be great athletes.truthfully,i think winning in the olympics is not really a priority in that country that's why its not given that much of an effort and importance.

  8. We have 4 years to prepare for the next Olympics. The government should be more serious in supporting the selection and training of our Olympics athletes. There should be enough budget to get really good trainers, coaches, equipment, and allowances for the athletes, so that they would get proper nourishment and health care.It should be a serious, meticulous and all around REAL support, not just in words but in deed.

  9. Instead of putting a huge amount as a price of those who can bring a medal, why not putting it to the department or organization who trained our guys?as expected,we can't get the medal because our team do not have those proper training compare to other countries who got big budget for their players.

  10. You just need someone willing and able to dedicate him/herself to perfecting his/her abilities in one sport. If there is not much funding, then weightlifting or track are options. Track is highly competitive, though.

Look at the sports that Filipinos currently do. What are their favorites? Are any of those already Olympic sports? Are any of them similar to an Olympic sport? If so, find those with potential and get them trainers! That's the best way to begin winning medals. Once you get one or two medals, it can inspire Filipinos to learn Olympic sports, because they'll see that someone from their country did win, which means it's possible for them also.

  11. First of all there should be a Philippine Olympic Team funded by the Philippine Government and number supporter will be the President of the Philippines and also should be sponsored by the big businesses in the Philippines.

The Olympic Team will recruit and train athletes in different categories. That should be a massive training like they do in China, USA, Australia, Russia, Great Britain, etc.

What a pity that the opening, closing and games are not even shown on television in the Philippines.  I rang my sister in Manila if she is watching the Olympics Opening but she told me it is not even on television in Manila.  What is the government doing there making the people ignorant of what is going on with the world.  They cant even put a budget in putting the Olympics on television.

I believed that there are Filipinos very good in a lot of sports.

  12. There is no substitute in training. Practice makes (close to) perfect. Well, first of all, we really need to take Olympics very seriously. We are bigger than some other countries that is competing and yet not winning. I'd say find more talents, search the whole country if you will and discipline them and train them so that by 2012 they will be ready. One strategy would be expanding our choices of sports. we should not be limited to boxing, taekwondo, swimming, etc. we will have a better chance if we explore new boundaries. Support (in all ways) is the best way we will win these competitions. Come on people, they are representing us, we should be proud of them. Congratulations to these people and I hope when they go back home they receive the same welcoming as if they had won because they had tried so hard.

  13. if start considering we may not get any medals on sports that we let say lacks the physical attributes, then let us not hope for any olympic medal, the mere fact that filipinos only watch or gives importance to popular sports is our own mistake, go ask yourself how many times you've watch, read or played basketball? but have you watched any weightlifting lately, did you ever went into any gymnastics events? look at the collegiate level, do anyone know who one the seniors division football(soccer), but you'll probably tell me who won the basketball title junior division.

just think what if some of those high flyers in the PBA would take up High jump instead or those long limb forwards be in swimming.

I think the only preparation the philippines needed is for the filipino people to go out and patronized sport events other than basketball, boxing billiards - maybe someday that child you brought to that gymnastic event or any other sport would find that sports interesting and probably get into it and someday bring home RP's first olympic gold.

  14. Very simple. Ask Manny Pacqiou to resign from his profesional status, cancel all contracts with commercial organizations, give up all his belts and play only for the country.

That guy can get you a boxing gold in any weight he is eligible for.

Also, if 9 ball pool becomes an olymic event (and I think it is quite popular) Efron Reyes and Bustaamante stand a good medal chance

  15. List of Suggestions:

-Get a national census on which sport should we participate and   hold National Tryouts.

-Concentrate on sports where we have the greatest chance to win

-Publicly follow the progress of athlete training and funding

-Scrap Pork Barrels of Senators and Congressmen to fund athletes for the 2012 London Olympics!!!!!!!!!!

-Pass a law that it is punishable by Death penalty if one is caught using Olympic Funds inappropriately. !!!!!!

  16. Simple. The Private Sector should also help out our athletes not just the Government. Every bit of help will be beneficial to our athletes as TRAINING is the most important thing prior to winning a Gold, Silver or even a Bronze medal. We should really keep on sending our Heroes to international competitions to further enhance their skills and boost their self confidence. Just my 2 cents. =)

  17. I believe the althelete's have to be polled and trained continuously from this time till the next olympic games...  Funny how people expect our altheletes to win a gold when we don't invest on our althletes.  Do we give support to these althletes, or we just watch and see what happens to the games....  We don't prepare them, we don't support them... I hope the people in government reads this, they're supposed to be the one's promoting  and supporting this endeavor... who should we wait for... a "SuperPinoy" natural born OLYMPIAN? or should we start "DOING" things to make it happen.

  18. honestly, our country really lacks the skills and competence in these sports compared to other countries since we are a thrid world country, compared to china, usa, australia, uk - compare our physique, height, skills and funds for training we already lose! In my opinion, nothing is impossible, it is possible for our country to win a gold medal, HOW? i am 100% sure there are sooooooooooooo many fil am's, fil chi's, fil aussies around the globe, why not use them (since they didn't do anything for our country and since they just leave just to get out of the country's poverty and problems) we should use them and their skills to prove our country's worthiness. this indeed would prove their nationality and their sincerity to out country and will give us some edge than other countries, also, we could try to participate in all the sports so that chances of winning will be higher, the government should seek potential athletes such as looking in varsities in schools or gold medalists in competitions, the limelight should be on them!

  19. I think the Philippines officials must find out what kind of sport which the native athletic game competitors is good at and mastered at. The second step is to start training right now before it is too late. Who are those best athlete in Philippines? After the initial training and trial then it will be the time to test and find out the performance if it will be able to domain  the competition in 2012 Olympics in London. Why and how the Chinese athletes earned 51 gold medals are stated in the followings.

    1) The best ones are chosen to train for the Olympics competitions

    3) Best coaches are hired

    4) Monitoring the trainees closely and carefully on a daily basis.

    5) Ensure that both trainers and trainees are dedicated to sport

    6) All Chinese sport competitors are treated training is a full time job.

I think Hong Kong doesn't bring home a medal either. Those competitors competitors are trained by top pay trainers mainly from China. I personally think that the Hong Kong athletes are not dedicated to sport. Rather, they are too much in pursuing materialistic matters and life styles of Hong Kong-do least and get the highest pay in this world. I think that the Hong Kong cronyism of fascist government making highest civil servants' salaries making Hong Kong a total failure in sport. It has something to do with Hong Kong pollution too. Sportsmen and normal citizens are easily getting tire out in Hong Kong foul air. I think Wushu is more appropriate for oriental peoples. However, it will difficult to compete with those Chinese kung fu masters.

I guess it is necessary to select one kind of sport that Philippinos are good at. For instance, Indonesia and Malaysia are good at one kind of sport only and they won a double in gold and a silver in a single, Singapore has hired the Chinese seconders from the China's table tennis team. I think boxing may be easier for Philippines. It doesn't cost that much. As two Chinese gold and silver medal winners are from poor provinces, I think the other Asian countries can do it, too.

  20. They should train not months away from 2012! They should train for 4 years. I mean the hardest part is to concentrate on the training rather than joining other events like the SEA Games, Asian Games, and others (though it may sound harsh for others because it is only my own opinion), but they should participate in any qualifiers. In order to get a gold medal, they should train 4 years rather than months or weeks before.

  21. philippines should have to change the school phisical training system

every big town should have atlhetic training arena, swimmingpool

for students etc(with professional instructors).how to find the money?

this is a problem that only local politician can solve

....otherwise paquiao will remain the only  philipino hero...4 years are enough to find natural talents.

  22. I don't think we are lacking in talented athletes and I agree that there is a need for better training and more support for sports development. Especially when we are up against foreign participants who I think are trained straight from the womb! If the government can offer a PhP 15M reward for athletes who can bring home the gold, I can't think of any reason why they can't use this money to improve their training in the first place. But of course, in the grand scheme of things, there are so many areas that need to be prioritized in our country like education, science and research, health care, human resource development, human settlements, agriculture, I could prattle on, the list is that long! What we need is direction and a true concerted effort to change things in the Philippines. Its easy to point an accusing finger at the government, that's our senators' job, its harder to make a personal commitment to be a better person. We were able to do that once, a few days in February long ago, I'm still hopeful we can do that again and maybe then we can emerge as the true Asian leader we started out to be, not just in sports but in all aspects of nationhood.

  23. First thing is the support from the government for financial and emotional so that the participant for the olympic can practice, practice, practice, practice and keep on practicing till they will break the world record! And that is the moment they have to be proud a representative of the Republic of the Philippines!

  24. We all trained harder, and I beleive all the athletes have done their best. But Preparation takes a lot of time, phelps for example has been living, breathing, talking, eating swimming like forever. I mean to prepare for London 2012, we need to start now, not a few months before the big event. I believe the Government has a lot to do with the preparations like providing uniforms, practices and incentives to the athletes. In the end it all boils down to support. Being an athlete can really be expensive and sadly not all of our athletes can afford the expensive practives.

  25. hello Miss  yahoo philippines! well it's not that easy to give an answer to your question, why? first we don't have the capacity to be a good athlete in the country, we don't have a system of  discipline  to our athletes and lastly needs financial support of the government, good gym and space like in those countries, most of all  motivation from the heart, without all these nothing will work.

Take africa as an example or the middle east, they don't have these oppotunities neither but they are motivated to succeed and supported by their government. do you see what i mean?

  26. Simple.  The government should appeal to all the fat-cat businesses out there,. like SM, Jollibee, PLDT, Globe, Ayala, etc. to act as sponsors for our best athletes.  These sponsors should provide sufficient money for their training and daily living expenses.  Once that is secured, then there should be competitions in all areas of the country to select the best in the various sports, and then narrow it down to maybe the top two in each sport.  Let them train between olympics for their sport.  It is about time for the big money pockets to give something back to the country.

  27. Start looking for qualified athletes. As in qualified athletes.

Start the training now. Not on the last 6 months before the London Olympics.

Change the people in the commission handling the Philippine sports.

These are some simple things need to be done but very effective.

  28. It's all about "mind set".  Do you have that as individual?

Wether you are being supported by government or not, is your body and soul set to that discipline?

If you make any excuses or whatsoever excuses you can think of,  it will not succeed because you are set yourself up for failures.  Who cares if you don't get support from anyone.  Set your mind for excellence or something you want to be part of and your off to something dramatic.  Others will follow.

Good Luck and have fun. Enjoy.  I will be rooting for you in 2012 Olympics.

  29. We have a lot of good and promising athletes in our country, it's just a matter of support from the government that matters. Like, setting of funds or a separate government fund for our athletes that will help them develop their talents plus a longer preparations to hound their talents in sports wherein they can say "WE ARE READY TO COMPETE" when 2012 Olympics comes.

We have great boxers, so why not concentrate on this kind of sport and spend money and time to make our boxers more competitive. I'm sure if our athletes are well funded for sure many will join and devote their time.

    MABUHAY ANG PILIPINAS!

  30. Practice. Practice. Practice.

Sports is about excellence, being at one's best. Discovering new talents and developing their skills and proficiency at their sport should be the focus of our sports officials. Lack of budget should not be made an excuse. Remember that Ethiopian fellow (Abebe Bikila) who ran barefoot in the marathon and won gold? He couldn't even afford shoes and he just trained on rough terrains.

Filipinos have been too focused on politics and budgets and lack of support. Those things would never win medals.

Discover new athletes and train them.

  31. we have to admit first that we cannot get medals in sports like swimming, basketball and track and field--- for the simple reason that we lack height. face reality first.

Second, we have to emulate Thailand and our other neighbors from Southeast asia who are ahead of us sports-wise.

Concentrate on sports which do not require much height. Thailand focused on boxing and weightlifting-- and we should do the same. Even Vietnam (a measly delegate of 11), won a silver for weightlifting in Beijing.

Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore got medals from badminton and table tennis-- sports which the Filipinos can be very good at if we start training early and get the priority in funds.

I say the Sports Commission of our country should focus on the sports which we can really be dominant at, or at least have a realistic shot at a medal

I push mainly for boxing and weightlifting-- focus all the development training and funds there. Taekwondo, Wushu (If it gets recognized), and Judo  should also be considered instead of trying so hard  and wasting all our money in basketball and swimming, which are lorded by 6footers.
